Could you tell us about yourself and your business?
Thank you so much for having me. My name is Nadean Carson, and I own Oya Construction, located in Roanoke, Virginia. We primarily focus on installing and maintaining erosion and sediment control measures on construction sites—essentially, keeping dirt where it belongs and out of our waterways. We mainly work on erosion control and stormwater projects, helping contractors comply with environmental regulations. We ensure that sites are managed responsibly to protect local ecosystems from construction impacts.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I’ve been in the construction industry for 22 years. I’m a civil engineer by education, and I’ve worked in both environmental and construction sectors. Often, these two areas clash—environmental regulatory agencies don’t always see eye-to-eye with the construction industry, and vice versa. I’ve worked my whole career to bridge that gap. About nine years ago, I began focusing on stormwater management, which was a perfect way to combine both fields.
Can you talk more about the challenges you face?
The biggest challenge is balancing the needs of the environment with the demands of construction. Regulations are necessary, but they can also be difficult to navigate and implement. The industry often sees them as burdens, while regulators may not always understand the practicalities of construction work. It’s about finding that middle ground and educating both sides on how to work together.
What are your future goals for Oya Construction?
We want to continue growing and expanding our services. My goal is to become a leader in stormwater and erosion control solutions, not just in Virginia but beyond. I also want to keep advocating for better collaboration between construction and environmental agencies, finding more ways for both to coexist harmoniously.
